On looking at light for a long time
Painting begins with a slow kind of attention. Before any brush touches the surface, the studio is simply a place where light moves across a wall, changes the temperature of a color, and asks to be watched. Mixing a pale ochre is less about the pigment than about waiting to see how it settles when the afternoon softens.
Over many hours, a surface accumulates decisions that no single gesture could have planned. Each layer records a moment of looking, and each correction is a small argument with what was seen the day before. The work becomes a record of that patience, and the finished canvas holds the quiet evidence of time spent standing in front of it.
From the studio notebook
Form is what remains after time has argued with the first idea.
